The easiest way to learn this is to learn how to enjoy your own company, especially when nothing fun is happening around you. It makes it easier to be with you or around you because nothing about your energy says, “I need you to be here so I can be okay.”
My formula is B, E, I.
B — Behind the scenes: the work you do that no one sees—your habits, your state of mind, what you tell yourself, how you process your emotions and desires, your preparation, and how intentional you are about your craft. Whether you’re an artist (because everyone is an artist) or a creative or an employee, how do you prepare on the inside? Because your outside expression is what leaks your art.
E — Exposure: how often you put yourself out there. We’re social animals. Even if you’re the most introverted person, you still need to be out there, in rooms, learning how the outside world works. When you read, be the type to go out, observe, and practice. It’s all uncomfortable, but that’s the point.
I — Integrate: Where’s the intersection between what you know, what you’ve unlearned, and what you’re doing now?
So the work of becoming an experience starts with being comfortable with yourself and cultivating the presence that comes from private work—presence that makes anyone you meet want to be around you.
